Patrick McCord is a prophet of the future of the written word. At times provocative and hopeful, he has inspired several animated discussions, both during the presentation and afterwards, among my college writing students at the Savannah College of Art and Design. With wit, warmth and acuity, Patrick manages to forecast the foreboding future of writing and publishing while at the same time reassuringly optimistic. His presentations were truly mind-opening, in the most invigorating ways.

What an absolutely outstanding presentation Write Yourself Free was! I was so impressed with the comfort, confidence, knowledge and wisdom both Susie and Patrick have to share. They easily owned the room, owned the night, and kept the crowd engaged, eager, highly energized and entertained! Their respective talents complement one another forming a partnership power-packed with the potential to bring your writing goals and dreams to fruition. Bravo!

(On Screenwriting) I thought Patrick was terrific. In three hours he provide just enough content to instruct and inspire, but not overwhelm. And a great balance between practical tips and conceptual insights.

Before the workshop I doubted I could write a screenplay. Now I am convinced that I can do it. All it took was one three-minute exercise!

Write Yourself Free (SM) Workshops: Discover Your Author-ity
The purpose of the Write Yourself Free(SM) method is to connect writers with their natural strengths as communicators, so that the act of writing feels free, natural, and playful. The Write Yourself Free (SM) method is based on the latest psychological research, and as a method, it can be used by writers at all levels, from school-age to professional. However, Write Yourself Free(SM) strategies are not the way writing is taught in school, nor are they rule-based formulas. Instead, Write Yourself Free(SM) offers models, games, and strategies to liberate each individual's expressiveness and empower clearer and more creative written communications.
About Storytelling Workshops (dates: tba)
Tell Your Story and Discover: the Write Yourself Free(SM) way.
Nothing is quite as entertaining as a well-told story. It’s not acting and it’s not confession, but a connection between beating hearts via voice and ears. Speaking your story as a simple truth, without notes, without apology, can be a useful skill, and discovering the stories you have to tell can be an exciting, even enlightening process. This workshop will help you develop story ideas into focused tales. We will incorporate journaling, acting techniques, cognitive and body skills, and regular storytelling practice to help you become a confident, entertaining storyteller. [Opportunity to show off.]
"Dr. McCord helped our daughter organize her thoughts, learn critical thinking skills and then use this information to write a better essay. Her papers are steadily improving and our whole family has learned how to structure an essay. He is personally supportive and an excellent Professor. We can’t recommend him highly enough."
The Grevers Family, Staples High School Parents, Westport, CT
"Dr. McCord really helped me prepare for High School and he taught me more than any other teacher has in the subject of English. Under his tutelage, I felt I had grown immensely as a writer and as a student." George Birch, Staples High School, Westport, CT

Language gym: build brain muscle through exercise in hefting punctuation and grammar.
Screenwriting Workshops - Description
Part l. Inspiration to Structured Story
Part 2. How Your Movie Flows: Dream Logic, Scenes and Ideas
(Workshops are related but you can take either. Both will be given twice.)
Part 1. Inspiration to Structured Story
Write your inner movie, then solve the structural puzzles.
Screenwriters are often confused by screenwriting “how-to’s” that read like Papal Bulls or Non-negotiable contracts. You can’t write creatively and fret about someone else’s rules. So learn how to get going and keep going, and then, when you have a draft, discover the structure your story needs. No guarantee that you will finish your screenplay but all your questions will get answered, and you will learn and practice effective methods for writing both in the Hollywood three-act structure and less conventional films as well.
Limited enrollment: 6
Part 2. How Your Movie Flows
The best movies come from the place in your brain that dreams. Dream-logic is unlike other kinds of thinking or reasoning or even verbal story-telling. This workshop will use film examples to demonstrate how the dream gets on the screen. Once you see it, you can do it. We will also practice techniques to activate your imagination. Get out of your own way and learn how to let your images speak.
